Only 4% of housings in Bulgaria are in good condition

“Only some 3-4% of housings in Bulgaria are in good condition,” architect Valentin Trashliev, Management Board Chairman of the Bulgarian Association of Geotechnical and Tunnel Construction, said yesterday when speaking about a forum to be held in October in Sofia. According to him, all the other buildings can be described as dangerous. “There is plenty of built-up residential space per capita in Bulgaria but it is of extremely low quality,” added Trashliev. This statistics do not only include abandoned houses in deserted settlements but also inhabited buildings in major cities. The buildings are dangerous not only as structures but also as internal infrastructure. Architect Trashliev explained that the problem did not lie in the legal framework and inadequate control alone but also in the consciousness of Bulgarians and the lack of proper maintenance.

“The construction of a tunnel under the Shipka pass will be costly and unjustified,” stated Trashliev. He explained that in order to be effective, the facility will require the construction of adjacent infrastructure, but there are no transport needs for it. According to the expert, it would be much more advantageous to build a tunnel under the Petrohan pass. Representatives of the Bulgarian Association of Geotechnical and Tunnel Construction explained that the most appropriate solution for passing through the Kresna Gorge, which is part of the Struma motorway, is through a tunnel. Since this is a seismic region, a tunnel would be the most secure and safe option, environmental damages would be trifling and maintenance would be much easier. “Everywhere in Europe, traffic is largely located underground,” commented engineer Viktor Tashev, Manager of the branch organisation.
