Some 13 people detained for VAT draining through fuel trade

A criminal group involved in VAT draining schemes through fuel trade has been disclosed, the press office of the Interior Ministry announced. Some 13 people aged between 28 and 43 were arrested. Last year, they defrauded the state budget with BGN 12 mln.

The anti-mafia operation of the police was carried out in Sofia and Pernik. Fuels were delivered from Greece, and, after each payment of excise duty, multiple simulation transactions were made to avoid paying VAT. The group used "chain" companies. According to investigators, companies can conditionally be divided into three groups - companies in the role of "missing traders", companies - "buffers", and "brokers" who are also the real beneficiaries of tax credits.

A total of 14 sites - gas stations, offices and living quarters, as well as four vehicles - were searched. At one of the stations, around 18 tonnes of unbooked fuel left unaccounted for were discovered. Accounting documents were seized, computer configurations, rubber-stamps, mobile phones and SIM cards.
