Sofia plans to renovate boulevards and modernise public transport in 2013

Sofia Municipality’s plans for 2013 include the rehabilitation of some of the capital’s major boulevards, a focus on the modernization of public transport, moving forward with the two-level junctures projects, building different facilities connected to Simeonovsko Shose Blvd. and Stojan Mihaylovski Blvd., as well as the crossing on Bulgaria Blvd. Lubomir Hristov, Deputy Mayor for transportation, revealed the plans in an interview with BTA news agency. The Municipality is set to start rehabilitation of some of the major boulevards in the capital, including Tsarigradsko Shose, Evropa and, probably, Dondukov, as part of its transport programme for 2013, Hristov said.

“The idea is to concentrate our efforts on the modernization of public transport and its three main types – the tube, trams and trolleys and buses,” the Deputy Mayor said.

Ten more trains will be purchased to run the route of the newly finished expansion of the first diameter of the tube to Sofia Airport and Mladost Business Park, Hristov added.

Construction of the underground section to the airport will be moving parallel with the train procurement project, which envisions the purchase of 20 new energy efficient motor streetcars. According to Hristov the new technology will help lower electricity costs, both in terms of money and saved emissions.
