Sofia residents to save up to 30% on central heating bills

“All central heating stations in Sofia have already been upgraded and modernised. This will allow the customers of the heating utility in the capital to reduce their consumption of heating energy by up to 30%,” Elen Gerdzhikov, Chairman of the Sofia Municipal Council (SMC), told Klassa.

“The updated automated facilities have been equipped with external gauges that will regulate the access of heating energy to the building in accordance with the changes in the air temperature and the consumption of heat can thus be optimised,” explained Gerdzhikov.

The municipal councillors, however, are worried by the recent interpretative decision of the Supreme Court of Cassation, according to which liabilities for water, electricity and heating bills can be sought for only three years back. This will affect adversely the Sofia Central Heating Utility which has receivables of over BGN 210 mln dating more than three years back.

“We will apply under EU projects for rehabilitation of buildings. The administration is drafting specific measures to encourage people to improve the exterior and energy efficiency of their homes, especially in the residential quarters with predominantly pre-fab blocks of flats. The department of Sofia Chief Architect Petar Dikov is drafting 12 standard projects, to be given free of charge to the condominiums in the pre-fab buildings.

The Municipality, in its capacity of property owner, will repair a total of 600 buildings. “Twenty-three kindergartens already meet the energy efficiency requirements and another 61 are yet to be rehabilitated,” added Elen Gerdzhikov.
