Some 14% of workers with Christmas bonuses

Just over one-tenth of employed Bulgarians received a Christmas bonus or a 13th salary from their employer at the end of 2013. The data came from a special survey conducted by BBSS Gallup International.

About 18% of working Bulgarians said that, at the end of the month, they usually take some sort of bonuses in addition to their basic salary almost every year. This year, such bonuses were actually received by 4% less people - 14%. Bulgarians with a personal monthly income of over BGN 700 are among the highest proportion of employees who were "encouraged" via some additional money. Every fourth of these workers took a Christmas bonus or thirteenth salary. The situation is similar among university graduates - 23% of workers with a university degree enjoyed a Christmas bonus. The percentage of bonuses received among women is significantly higher compared to working men - 17% of women received some additional payment, while the percentage for men is only 10%.

Those who received Christmas bonuses at the end of 2012 spent these mainly on the extra expenses during the Holidays. Some 61% of workers who received some kind of bonuses said that they spent these on gifts, festive decorations, festive table dishes and weekend trips around Christmas and New Year.

About 27% of those who received some extra money at Christmas said that they have already spent it or will spend the money in order to meet everyday expenses - paying bills, food and other household purchases.

For 5% of the people who took bonuses, this additional money came as a lifebelt for the repayment of loans, leases and contributions on leases, while another 5% of these set the money aside as savings.
