Sergei Stanishev: The outcome of the referendum is a triumph of “direct democracy” over the “authoritarian regime”

“A triumph of direct democracy over the authoritarian regime” was how BSP’s leader Sergei Stanishev described the outcome of the first referendum in Bulgaria’s modern history. He considers the results a success for the cause, that started with the socialists in opposition garnering support from hundreds of thousands of Bulgarians for a petition to get the public’s say on the construction of Belene NPP. “With this ratio of votes in favour of the project, I think the authorities simply have to review the issue and the question the BSP petition posed. This is the first referendum with definitive results,” Stanishev said and reminded that in 2007 Borissov was elected Mayor of the capital with only 200,000 of a total of 1.5 mln residents of Sofia with voting rights. “It would have been funny, if it wasn’t so tragic,” was Stanishev’s reaction to statements from Prime Minister Borissov and his Finance Minister, saying that the referendum was nothing more than a waste of money. According to Stanishev, the process of digitalization of tv broadcasting alone cost BGN 18 mln in advertisements, approximately the money spent on the referendum, only that the latter protects the public’s right to have a say on how the country is governed. For Stanishev, the mere fact that the majority of people voted “yes” on the development of nuclear power generation in Bulgaria is a personal defeat for Borissov and a vote of non-confidence for the Prime Minister. “I’m proud that our party acted as an instrument of civil society. For the first time Bulgarians voted in a constructive way, supporting and not rejecting something,” was how Stanishev finished his comment on the outcome of the nation’s vote.
