US Ambassador to Bulgaria, H.E. Marcie Ries: If you want to be energy independent, you should renew the debate on shale gas

If Bulgaria wants to be energy independent, the country should renew the debate on shale gas, US Ambassador to Bulgaria, H.E. Marcie Ries said on Nova TV.

She gave her own country as an example, which "may become independent" because of shale gas extraction.

"When we talk about energy independence, we talk about diversification, which provides alternatives - if one source is interrupted, for example, in the event of disasters, we rely on an alternative one, so that extreme emergencies won't happen," H.E. Marcie Ries said.

"In the USA, we had a long debate about shale gas, especially among people living in mining regions. They discussed all the problems - the necessary information is acquired in this way," said the Ambassador. According to her, there should be an extensive discussion on shale gas in Bulgaria.

"When Bulgaria fulfils the requirements of the programme, then visas will be removed," said H.E. Marcie Ries.

"One of the things I like in Bulgaria is that here you can go for a walk, go to the park, or pass by a beautiful church or gallery, and have a coffee," said the Ambassador.
