Academician Stefan Vodenicharov to be the new Minister of Education

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov nominated Academician Stefan Vodenicharov for Minister of Education. He will replace Sergei Ignatov who resigned, but his nomination needs to be passed by the National Assembly first. This was announced by the Government Information Service.

“Academician Stefan Vodenicharov is undoubtedly an excellent scientist and it was not by chance that he was elected as the President of the Bulgarian Academy of Science (BAS). I am convinced that, thanks to this candidacy, the development of research, as well as the close cooperation between the Academy and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Science, will improve," said Prime Minister Boyko Borissov at the beginning of Wednesday's meeting of the Cabinet.

"I accepted the Prime Minister's invitation, because I think that the fact that we are poor and do not consume much is due to the fact that we do not produce enough. Without education, without science, without innovation, we cannot increase our potential. Furthermore, of approximately 4 million people of the working population, about 3 million people are employed in the manufacturing sector," said Academician Vodenicharov at the Council of Ministers. He noted that there are many things related to improving professional education.

"Currently, we do not have trained staff who would immediately enter the industry. The science sector's financial constraints in recent years have also cast a very heavy shadow on the effectiveness of scientists," added Academician Stefan Vodenicharov.

Academician Vodenicharov is President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and has also been Director of the Institute of Metal Science for a long time.
