Academician Stefan Vodenicharov is the new chairman of BAS

Academician Stefan Vodenicharov was elected as the new President of BAS for the next four years. His election involved 97 members of the General Assembly of BAS, as 57 of them voted for Academician Vodenicharov, 32 - voted against, and 8 voting-papers were blank. Academician Vodenicharov was elected after a secret ballot, i.e. with voting-papers and a ballot-box.

Since the demise of Academician Stefan Dodunekov in August, this has been the second time this year that the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences has elected a President. Academician Dodunekov was BAS's President only for about two months, since he was elected President of the Academy on June 11.

Academician Stefan Vodenicharov has, so far, been Director of the Institute of Metal Science, Equipment and Technologies Academician Angel Balevski. He was nominated by the Assembly of Academicians and Corresponding Members of BAS.

Academician Vodenicharov was born on September 1, 1944 in Sofia. He graduated from the Technical University and, in 1991, he received the degree of Professor. Since 2004, he has been a Corresponding Member of BAS and, since 2012, he has been an acting member of the Academy. He has been the head of 207 projects, among which contracts for programmes of NATO and the European Union.

Academician Vodenicharov's four-year programme for the stabilisation and development of BAS consists of 20 pages and is published on the Academy's website. In it, he states that one of his first tasks, if elected President, will be related to the optimisation of the structure and activities of BAS's Central Management, which is planned to be replaced by a Common Academic Administration that should be more flexible and efficient, according to Academician Vodenicharov's intentions.
