The Head of Bulgaria’s Transplantations Agency has been fired as well

Health Minister Desislava Atanasova fired the Head of the Executive Agency for Transplantation Dr. Silvi Kirilov. Dr. Maria Simeonova was appointed to his position. She has been an intensive care specialist at the Military Medical Academy (MMA).

The main reason for Dr. Kirilov's dismissal was the fact that the Executive Agency for Transplantation has not been working satisfactorily. In 2012, only four transplants were carried out, which, according to the Health Minister, is a very small number. "I think that I allowed too much time to see an improvement in the performance of the fund," added Atanasova.

In turn, the new Director Maria Simeonova was adamant that there is a gap in the system and she will work to resolve it. According to Simeonova, perhaps this gap includes the lack of coordination between donor bases and transplantation centres.

Desislava Atanasova said that she chose Dr. Simeonova because of her undeniable professionalism. The new Director gained experience in leading hospitals in Israel and the Netherlands, and, from 1992 until January 30, 2013, she was part of MMA's Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care.

Meanwhile, the Health Minister announced that, on Wednesday night, missing chemotherapeutics arrived in the country - more than 24,000 ampoules, which will be distributed to wholesale suppliers. According to Atanasova, supply problems are due to a change in the production technology in the plant in Austria and not due to gaps in Bulgaria's healthcare.
