Traffic via the southern arch of Sofia ring road restored

"We succeeded to build the southern arch of Sofia ring road and the bridge trestle over the Bistrishko Chausse with political will," said Prime Minister Boyko Borissov at the opening ceremony of the section. He explained that there had been manipulation attempts during the project implementation. The ceremony was attended by Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Lilyana Pavlova, Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova and Head of the Road Infrastructure Agency, Lazar Lazarov.

“The largest road project, financed under the Operational Programme Regional Development has been opened for traffic nearly three months ahead of schedule,” said Lilyana Pavlova. The investment is BGN 44.7 mln worth, VAT included, the reconstructed section is 3,582 km long, and the consortium Glavbolgarstroy - South Arc is the project contractor.

Around BGN 100 mln were saved from compensations to owners of terrains, adjacent to the road section. Borissov explained that for this purpose the project had been changed, and the local roadways would be constructed under the bridge.

“This investment enables the residents of Sofia and those from the surrounding cities, and the entire transit traffic to travel more easily and safely,” explained Minister Pavlova.

"The southern neighbourhoods are the most densely populated, the inner connection, from Alexander Malinov Blvd to Bulgaria Blvd, is almost completed, "said Yordanka Fadakova. According to her, the funding for the overall reconstruction of Alexander Malinov Blvd is available - it was granted under the Operational Programme Transport. The road section takes over the local traffic from Sofia and the transit traffic from the Trakia and the Hemus highways, in direction Southwest Bulgaria and the neighbouring countries.

“The continuation of the southern arc, from the district of Buxton to the Lyulin highway, is planned for the next programming period,” said Lazar Lazarov. According to him, the route is very complicated because it passes via a tunnel which should be built first, then via a trestle and a dam wall, located between the town of Suhodol and the Lyulin mountain.
