A campaign for free medical examinations for cancer to be launched

Several hospitals in Sofia launched campaigns for free medical examinations for cancer, on the occasion of February 4 - the World Cancer Day.

Doctors at St. Sofia Medical Centre will perform free cervical cancer examinations until February 15. The examinations will be performed from 9:00 to 12:00 a.m. From February 4 to February 10, "Nadezhda" Centre for Reproductive Health will perform examinations for breast cancer. Appointments can be made by phone.

In Bulgaria, data of the National Cancer Registry show that new cases are between 1,100 and 1,200 per year. Women who die of cancer are just under 400. This means that, every day, a woman dies from cervical cancer in Bulgaria, on average, while three new cases are diagnosed. In Bulgaria, there are more than 30,000 new cases of cancer annually. Nearly 262,000 people suffer various types of cancer in the country.

The World Health Organisation reports 250,000 annual deaths of women due to cervical cancer. In Europe, this type of cancer is the second most common form of malignancy in women aged between 15 to 44, after breast cancer.

About 40% of cancers are potentially preventable. The risk of this disease can be significantly reduced if people stop using tobacco, limit alcohol consumption, avoid overexposure to sun and maintain a healthy weight, the National Cancer Hospital in Sofia advised on the World Cancer Day.
