The new head of SEWRC admits to illegal trade of cigarettes

"It is my fault and I am ready to suffer the sanctions provided for illegal trade of cigarettes in an online shop, which I owned", said Chairperson of the State Water and Energy Regulatory Commission (SWERC) Yuliana Ivanova, just a day after she assumed office. She explained that, 2 years ago, after having stopped dealing with energy, she decided to develop a website for selling groceries in cyberspace. "Obviously, we have not fully complied with legislation," said Ivanova. It turned out that she was unaware that she was performing unauthorised activities. She discovered that thanks to the media. Immediately after that, the service was discontinued. "I apologise to Prime Minister Borissov for what happened," said Yuliana Ivanova. She explained that she was no longer President of the company, but her son is. "This is a mistake of my lawyers, who dealt with this matter. It is my mistake too, however, and I will suffer the sanctions due," added Ivanova.

Asked whether she is ready to resign as Chairperson of the State regulator over the scandal, Yuliana Ivanova said: "If things go so much further, including my resignation, then I am ready to resign." The company of the newly elected Chairperson of the State Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (SEWRC) Yuliana Ivanova will be fined for illegal online cigarette trade, which has been prohibited since mid-2012, the Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism Delian Dobrev told journalists. "It is a mistake of lawyers who work in the company, but it is the responsibility of the owner - the CEO. Legislation provides sanctions and fines and these should be imposed," said Dobrev. He added that Yuliana Ivanova was not the owner of the company at the time she was selected as a member of SEWRC and, therefore, there is no conflict regarding her appointment.
