Sofia University students to protest against the increase of fees

Students will protest against the increase of Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski's fees. This was stated in an open letter of the Student Council to the Academic Council of Sofia University.

"With this open letter, we, Angry students, want to tell the management of Sofia University that we OPPOSE firmly the decision taken on January 30, 2013 by the Academic Council to raise fees for all courses of the University by 8% for the academic year 2013/2014. In our opinion, it is extremely immoral on the part of the oldest and most prestigious university in Bulgaria to increase fees for education at a time of growing poverty and unemployment. According to statistics: data of the NSI showed that 22.3% of Bulgarians live below the poverty line. According to the European Commission, one in four young people aged between 15 and 24 is a long-term unemployed. Therefore, a lot of students are deprived of the opportunity to work and pay for their education in this way. Our parents are not able to give more money for fees each semester. The minimum wage may have risen by 8%, but, at the same time, the cost of living has increased by 19.3% for the past four years. We would like to also remind that the minimum wage in Bulgaria is the lowest in the entire European Union."
