Bulgaria and Slovenia to enhance their support to Western Balkan countries in their EU integration path

The countries from South-East Europe, which have already joined the EU, made considerable progress in their development and now must enhance their support to Western Balkan countries in their process of EU integration. This was the joint position of Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev and Karl Erjavec, Slovenian Minister of Foreign Affairs, after their meeting in Sofia today, the press office of the Bulgarian President announced. Karl Erjavec is on an official visit to Bulgaria, during which he will attend the South-East European Cooperation Process (SEECP) summit. The two officials united behind the position that in conditions of multiple crises, countries from the South-East Europe region had to bear shared responsibility for maintaining the stability on the Balkans. Slovenia will take over the SEECP presidency in 2017.
The two officials also agreed that the bilateral trade between Bulgaria and Slovenia, which was EUR 265 million in 2015, could be increased considerably, and that both countries should encourage more business and official contacts between the countries.
“The most dynamic markets for Bulgaria are indeed the ones from our region, and over the past few years we have managed to double our economic and trade turnover with some of them,” Mr Plevneliev commented.
“The Slovenian economy offers favourable conditions to Bulgarian business, and we also see such perspectives for Slovenian business in Bulgaria,” Mr Erjavec noted.
The opportunities for expanding the economic co-operation between the two countries will be in the focus of President Plevneliev’s upcoming visit to Slovenia, scheduled for July 2016. The two officials pinpointed information and communications technologies, as well as the exchange of students and experts in this field, as the most perspective sphere for co-operation. The two sides also noted the active co-operation between Bulgaria and Slovenia in the spheres of education, science, and culture.
