BGN 15 mln to be extended for growing high-quality fruits and vegetables

“Bulgaria will ask for permission to pay BGN 15 mln for growing high-quality fruits and vegetables in 2012. The Ministry of Agriculture has drafted a scheme for the allocation of the financial assistance and by the end of the month, it will be submitted for approval by the European Commission,” said Minister of Agriculture and Food Miroslav Naydenov. The scheme is expected to become operational at the beginning of 2012 and the funds will be paid by the end of the year. Inspectors from the Food Safety Agency will be monitoring the quality of the fruits and vegetables at all stages of their production, transportation and trade.

“Salaries at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food have not been increased by 36%,” Naydenov explained, commenting on circulated data that the average salary of the Ministry’s employees had increased from BGN 777.02 in 2009 to BGN 1,056.40 in 2010. According to Naydenov, the remuneration of the central management which includes the directorates working on EU programmes and receiving additional money, has been incorrectly interpreted as the average salary at the Ministry.

“The Agriculture Ministry’s officials have an average salary of BGN 609, which is the lowest for the entire State administration. The actual pay raise is BGN 1.39 or 0.14%. The Ministry has submitted correct data but it has been misinterpreted. Whoever has made this mistake should bear the responsibility,” explained Naydenov.
