President-elect Rosen Plevneliev promises an additional BGN 15 mln for BAS

At a meeting with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences’ (BAS) Board of Trustees, President-elect Rosen Plevneliev promised an additional BGN 15 mln for its budget. “I vowed to hold talks with PM Boyko Borissov and Finance Minister Simeon Djankov and seek the BGN 5 mln which BAS urgently needs,” said President-elect Rosen Plevneliev. “In addition to this amount, I have promised another BGN 9-10 mln by mid-2012,” he specified. According to Plevneliev, these funds will come under the three-year financial framework of the Ministry of Finance.

“I promised to seek ways to improve the financial situation next year because we realise the need for BAS to be supported,” said Plevneliev. “We will not work piecemeal or fight for every single lev. We are seeking greater sustainability,” explained the newly-elect Head of State. He added that he would not like scientists to protest next year again as they did last year and this year. “BAS should be able to focus on its main activity and not have to beg for money every year,” said Plevneliev.

BAS, on its part, promised to draft within a few days a 3-year programme for the development of science. According to BAS' head, Academician Nikola Sabotinov, it will be ready within days. However, he stressed that the promised BGN 5 mln will not be enough, but that, in a private conversation, the Prime Minister had assured him that he will never allow BAS to perish.
