Desislava Atanasova wants an additional BGN 21 mln for healthcare

Health Minister Desislava Atanasova has asked for an additional BGN 21 mln for the 2013 healthcare budget.

This year's healthcare budget is the largest as a global budget framework, Atanasova said in Plovdiv, where she attended the opening of an exhibition of medicine, dentistry and pharmacy.

Although the budget for health is the biggest ever, Atanasova believes that further funding is necessary for the fund for treatment of children, for investments in the following year and for operating in difficult to access mountainous areas.

The approved budget is BGN 368 mln and, last week, Minister Atanasova submitted her opinion to the Ministry of Finance that an increase of the funding for treatment of children is necessary. This year's abolishment of the limit, which was BGN 180,000, has led to a wave of increases of the amount to be allocated. 490 children have benefited from this state support since the beginning of the year, and they have been treated in Bulgaria and abroad.

According to Desislava Atanasova, if the Fund and the Fund's Public Council continue to approve children for treatment, the money in the budget for this purpose will not be enough. This is why she wants the resources to be reviewed and increased. The Health Minister is confident that, between the first and the second reading, these funds will be budgeted.
