Every third driver admits to breaking the speed limit

31% of Bulgarian active drivers admitted that they have driven at over 30 km/h, according to the data from the latest nationally representative survey of BBSS Gallup International, commissioned by Klassa daily.

In February, amendments to the Road Traffic Act were introduced. The amendments provide for increased fines for speeding, as well as for the introduction of electronic speeding tickets issued via police traffic cameras and radar detectors having captured traffic violations. The photos will be sent to offenders and will serve for the issuance of criminal warrants. The aim is to increase the dexterity of the drivers, as well as the collectibility of fines.

A bit over 40% of adult Bulgarians have a driving license. These include regular drivers, comprising about 44%, while the so-called Sunday drivers constitute about one-fifth of the holders of driving licenses. 23% of holders of driving licenses in turn stated that they used them for their intended purpose less frequently than once a month or that they failed to use them at all.

About half of the active Bulgarian drivers admitted having committed one kind or another violation of the Rules of the Road Traffic. One third (31%) of drivers acknowledge that at least once they happened to exceed the maximum permitted speed limit of over 30 km/h. This is a road traffic offence which, until recently, resulted in the temporary suspension of their driving license.

Men in the 26-40 year age group are most fond of high speeds. Almost 36% of men and 38% of those aged 26-40 reckoned they exceeded the permitted speed limit of over 30 km/h.

The next most frequently admitted traffic violation referred to overtaking on a forbidden stretch of the road.
12% of drivers stated that at least once they have driven after having drunk a small amount of alcohol such as a can of beer, a glass of wine or a shot.
This practise is more popular in villages where the road traffic control is looser than in towns.
