Margarita Popova demands constitutional changes with respect to the judiciary

MPs to draft a project for amendments to the Constitution in its part on the judiciary, is the appeal of Minister of Justice Margarita Popova to the deputies from all parliamentary groups, during the discussion at first reading of amendments to the Judiciary System Act (JSA). The adopted amendments to the JSA provide for the introduction of a second exam for lawyers appointed within the judiciary. The training time for junior magistrates at the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is being increased from 6 to 9 months, and written and oral exams after the course are to be introduced as well.

During the debate, the Minister of Justice said that constitutional changes were needed and could be introduced by the National Assembly. According to her, the criteria for selecting judges should be higher.

Popova suggested the idea for an increase in the duration of the training of lawyers and gave as an example other European countries. The preliminary training period there is much longer than ours.

MP from Coalition for Bulgaria, Michail Mikov, adamantly opposed the idea. He said that the proposed changes would not lead to improvements in the professional skills of the staff of the magistracy.
