The granting of national additional payments to farmers to depend on the profits of the sector

Last year, grain-producers found themselves in such a beneficial situation, while as for the current one, they are also expected to realise a substantial revenue. "Therefore, these people who now are intensifying the tension, have received millions of leva exceeding the amount that was expected by them," explained Djankov and added that the financial assistance must be fair and subsidies should be granted not only to grain producers, but also for the rearing of animals and for vegetables and roses.

Because of the economic crisis, Romania and Greece do not grant to their farmers national additional payments. The Bulgarian budget 2011 provided overall BGN 300 mln to be allocated to grain producers. Another BGN 600 mln were contracted as EU subsidies per decare, thus depriving of financial support other agricultural sectors, explained the Agriculture Minister, Miroslav Naydenov.

The granting of subsidies per decare, whose launch was announced in the presence of the Prime Minister as of March 14 will be remitted no later than June 30, but provided that the farmers owe no liabilities to the Bulgarian State, announced the Agriculture Minister. Already payments have been transferred to the accounts of a total of 71,000 beneficiaries, while the farmers entitled to subsidies number 91,000 people. In fact, as regards the remaining 20,000 beneficiaries, problems such as overlapping areas and unpaid taxes were detected, explained Naydenov. He added that 78% of subsidies will be allocated to 3.4% of farmers engaged in grain production.
