The Environmental Impact Assessment of the Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline postponed by 2 months

"The deadline for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline has been extended by two months," announced yesterday Minister of Environment and Water Nona Karadjova. The reason for the delay is that the project company has not complemented the report as requested by the Ministry of Environment and Water. "The document with the assessment for compatibility with the European Ecological Network Natura 2000, however, includes the necessary information," explained Karadjova. She added that the ministry expected the investor – the Trans-Balkan Pipeline company, to complete the report in order the procedure of public hearings to contnue. "Even if the EIA is approved, it does not mean that the project will be implemented," said Karadjova. Russia is a majority shareholder in the project for construction of the pipeline participating with three companies and holding a 51% share package, while the remaining part is owned by Bulgaria and Greece - each having 24.5%.
