The 'Krasno Selo' district in Sofia to turn into an urban apocalypse?
The urban changes projected for our neighbourhood will turn Krasno Selo from a “beautiful village”, as the prominent Bulgarian writer Ivan Vazov called it in the past, to an “ugly village”, residents from the region united in an initiative committee against the planned urban changes in the neighbourhoods of Krasno Selo, Borovo and Buxton, said yesterday. The civil organisation warned that if the plans of the municipal administration are implemented the residents of these three districts would face a real “urban apocalypse”.
“In Krasno Selo, for example, construction of an 11-metre street next to the residential blocks of flats is projected,” said Natalia Papalezova from the civil committee. Even more striking according to her, is that the municipality plans to build a parking lot on a plot that citizens have long insisted be turned into a kindergarten or a playground. An extension of the Gotse Delchev boulevard by 5 metres is also projected, which means that trees will be removed, as well as the dividing line between the currently existing traffic lanes.
“This practically means that all the trees along the Gotse Delchev boulevard, from the Tsar Boris boulevard to the South Park, perhaps more than 200 in number, will be destroyed,” warned architect Boryana Shivacheva from the civil committee.
“Why didn’t the administration mention in its pre-election campaign that it intended to erect buildings in every garden?” Natalia Papalezova asked rhetorically.
“Some 35 trees, including protected species, near blocks 3 and 5 in Buxton will be cut down as well. Moreover, the projected new street here will be next to the kindergarten and our children will breathe the exhaust gases from vehicles,” said the outraged representatives of the district.
According Vesselin Kirev from Borovo, between 10 and 15 new buildings will be erected near two or three blocks of flats in the area, destroying thereby a huge green area and the living space of people. The situation is cynical, the more so because the trees were planted on the initiative of people from the neighbourhood and with their money.
“All these urban changes have been planned without the necessary publicity, while public discussions are not intended to hear the voice of the people, but merely to observe the procedure,” said architect Boryana Shivacheva. The citizens were also unanimous that the projected changes in Krasno Selo, Buxton and Borovo are in the interest of certain businessmen.
