Over 50% of Bulgarians do not trust the judiciary and the police

More than half of Bulgarian citizens do not trust the judiciary and the police and think that magistrates are susceptible to political and economic pressue, showed a research of the Center for the Study of Democracy (CSD), conducted among 1,700 people. "Very few Bulgarians believe that rich people can be sent to jail," said Todor Galev, who presented the results. Some 72.7% of respondents believe that the court is subordinated to economic interests, and 56.9% think that judges are susceptible to political influence, when ruling on cases. Some 56% of respondents suppose that magistrates make mistakes allowing guilty persons to be acquitted, and nearly two thirds of respondents are of the opinion that judges impose sentences that do not correspond to the offenses. Just 8% of respondents declare that  they have confidence in the judiciary.

The study shows that the police and the court receive an extremely low level of public confidence. The analysis of the Center for the Study of Democracy shows that in the past ten years, Bulgaria ranked last in the European Union, in terms of confidence in the law enforcement bodies.

Less than 50% of respondents are satisfied with the operation of the police, but less than 20% approve of the court, the data shows. Some 43.6% of respondents give positive assessment to the police and 18.7% to the judiciary. About 16.4% evaluate the performance of the police as poor and 34% give negative appraisal to the courts. According to Todor Galev, the law enforcement bodies in Bulgaria receive traditionally the lowest public support, but the public opinion remains negative, regarding all institutions.
