Boyko Borissov: Let's work hard instead of making trouble on the streets

“Let's work hard instead of making trouble on the streets,” said Prime Minister Boyko Borissov yesterday in Varna. The protests, staged in the recent weeks in several EU countries, provoked this comment. The Prime Minister said that, in the period 1995-1996, while Bulgarians had been striking, making barricades and burning automobile tires at intersections, the other countries had worked.

Borisov said that now was the time water treatment plants, highways and sports facilities to be constructed. The Prime Minister commented on the global economic crisis. "These countries, which are not disciplined and have spent more than they produced, create risk."

Borissov reminded that two years ago the Government had set our accession to the Eurozone as a priority, but currently the state of some countries had worsened and this posed a risk to Bulgaria. “Therefore, we said that we would enter the Eurozone when they are able to reach the agreed deficits – 3% of GDP," he said. He added that our country could avoid the second wave of the crisis only by following the current economic policy of the Government - namely by using the compensatory mechanisms of the EU funds. Borissov said that there were €9 bn available under this framework, which the country could absorb. Due to these funds, the 7.5 mln population of Bulgaria could pass through the crisis, created in other countries.

"There is no reason for disappointment, even when the largest economies are collapsing and this has its impact on Bulgaria as well. We are affected for the simple reason that those who invested in the country, now go bankrupt," he said.

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and Mayor of Varna Kiril Yordanov opened a discharging collector for wastewater on the road to the district of Vinnitsa.
