The European Commission highly evaluates Varna and Burgas Airports

Varna and Burgas Airports comply with the aviation security measures and are in full conformity with the EU and national technical requirements, according to the conclusion of the inspectors of the European Commission (EC) who carried out the monitoring of both airports, announced the Transport Ministry.

Since the EU accession of Bulgaria at the beginning of 2007, the main European institutions operating in the field of aviation security – the European Commission and the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) have been conducting annual audits and inspections of the airport operators in Bulgaria.

Despite the high evaluation resuts for aviation security, the concessionaire of both marine airports - the Bulgarian-German consortium Fraport Twin Star Airport Management JSC was criticised by experts of the Transport Ministry for its delay to meet its investment commitments, set out in the concession contract of 2006, which was signed under the previous government. The criticism was prompted by the delay of the construction of the new terminals at the airports. Fraport's representatives, however, were explicit that they provided significant investments, while the new terminals were scheduled for construction as early as this year.
