Lead and Zinc Works Kardzhali to sue the Ministry of Environment and Water for BGN 3.5 mln

The Administrative Court in Kardzhali will proceed with the case of the Lead and Zinc Works against the State. The metallurgical insists that the Ministry of Environment and Water (MEW) pays damages because of an unfulfilled investment project worth € 3.547 mln. “The entire claim is for €23.649 mln, but, at this stage, it is not valid,” said Viktor Atanasov, Chairman of the Court.

At the end of 2006, the works in Kurdzhali declared its intention before MEW to construct a new zinc plat in order to increase its zinc production from 32,000 tons to 45,000 tons. The investment plan was approved by the Supreme Expert Environmental Council with the MEW, but by order of Dzhevdet Chakarov, the then Minister of Environment and Water, from June 17, 2008 , the decision was suspended. In 2009, the Supreme Administrative Court revoked this order, and the construction of the zinc plant was initiated under a new order by Minister Nona Karadjova.

The Administrative Court in Kardzhali has appointed two expert reports – an auditing one and an expert report on the technological implementation of the project. The next hearing of the court is scheduled for September 18, 2011.
