Five percent of school children leave school because of incomprehensible lessons
Some 5% of school children leave school because of the inability to cope with the educational material, while approximately 15% of students find it extremely difficult to learn their complicated lessons and suffer from different diseases due to worries in their studies, said to Klassa daily, Yanka Takeva, Chairwoman of the Syndicate of Bulgarian Teachers (SEB). According to her, one of the biggest problems in the Bulgarian secondary education refers to the textbooks and training materials provided to teachers and school children.
SEB's observations showed that textbooks are written in high style, which makes them incomprehensible and intellectually inaccessible for both children and their parents. "The educational content is crammed with a huge amount of information, which school kids are obliged to memorise.
Besides, the interdisciplinary and integrative approach for lessons about the Bulgarian Revival to be studied simultaneously in history and literature classes has not been complied with. All this prevents students from coping well with the school material, while creating a feeling of insecurity in the child, as well as a sense of inability to handle the educational content. As a result, in 4-5 years time, they become potentially problematic children.
''The school kid loses the desire to go to school, runs away from classes and, after some time, it even drops out of school," indicated Yanka Takeva. The stress prompted by the difficulties encountered in learning lessons, in turn, provokes various diseases. "You see that children already suffer from the diseases typical for adults such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes. Actually, these are caused by different worries in their studies. Is there any country around the world aiming intentionally to make children ill?," asked SEB's Chairwoman. Besides, the textbooks used also pose problems to teachers. Teachers are required to present the school material in an intelligible form but this does not happen always because of the requirements imposed on them to adhere strictly to the textbook content, as well as to combine several textbooks while teaching the lessons.
