Fuel prices to be frozen for a month

“Fuel prices will be frozen for one month,” said Minister of Finance Simeon Djankov after the meeting between representatives of the Government, carriers, manufacturers and traders in fuels, in the Council of Ministers. A special memorandum, prepared by experts from the Lukoil-Bulgaria Ltd company, will be signed for this purpose. According to the document, the moratorium on oil prices will come into effect on Wednesday. “The signing of such documents with other oil companies is also underway,” said Djankov.

“A moratorium is not a market mechanism but I used my powers to impose it because the Bulgarian economy and end users are important to us," said Prime Minister Boyko Borissov.

“Brussels warned us that steps leading to market distortions must not be taken,” said yesterday evening Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism, Traicho Traikov, on Darik radio. He and Minister of Transport Alexander Tsvetkov did not attend yesterday's meeting.

Last week, the Minister of Economy was involved in a dispute with the Head of Lukoil, Valentin Zlatev, on the topic of fuel prices. “Market players in Bulgaria have started to assume a more responsible position than before, and the official statement of the Government and the Prime Minister has drawn public attention to the matter how the market functions and how Bulgarian consumers can use free competition in order to get the lowest possible prices,” said Traikov after the meeting.

“No one can tell me who will conduct the negotiations and how. Djankov was in charge of the issue from the outset and no one was pushed aside,” said Boyko Borissov. "Traikov enjoys my confidence, I appreciate his willingness to impose maximum transparency and my only remark is that before saying something in public, he should check it."
