SEWRC: Electricity prices to be hiked by around 10%

“The price of electricity will increase by around 10% as of July 1,” Angel Semerdjiev, Chairman of the State Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (SEWRC), said today. “It must be borne in mind that the price of electricity in Bulgaria has been lagging behind the inflation rate over the last 2-3 years,” explained Semerdjiev. According to him, consumption of electricity in our country is increasing despite the crisis in recent years. However, producers have not yet submitted their demands for new prices to SEWRC.

Semerdjiev added that he has not received a request for a reduction of the price of natural gas because of the 11.1% cheaper gas supply agreed with Russia in March 2012. According to Energy Minister Delian Dobrev, the reason is that protocol decisions enforcing the negotiated discounts will not be signed before May 14. “The problem is an administrative one, connected with an exchange of documentation and the signing of an additional agreement,” specified Dobrev.
