Four new highways to be completed by 2015

"Ljulin highway is the first one which will be launched with a legal permission to start operation," said Prime Minister Boyko Borissov at the opening of the highway yesterday. The opening ceremony was also attended by Minister of Transport Aleksander Tsvetkov, Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Rossen Plevneliev, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Tsvetan Tsvetanov, Minister of EU Funds Management Tomislav Donchev and Mr Dirk Ahner, Director General of the Directorate General for Regional Policy at the European Commission. Borissov noted that earlier this year a section from Maritza highway had been opened for traffic for the first time under Act 16.

"Trakia motorway will become operational in 2012, Maritza highway - in 2013, Sofia-Kalotina highway - in 2014, and Struma motorway - in 2015," said Rossen Plevneliev. According to him, following this schedule, the Government will honour its commitment until 2020 Bulgaria to have 7 highways and the same number of speed roads. The opening of the highway from Pernik to Sofia will ensure that the entire transit traffic will be redirected via the new route, instead of passing through towns and villages. It is expected the number of accidents and air pollution in the city to be reduced due to the decreased number of passing cars.

It is planned that another lane will be built in the section between the Shell gas station and the junction of Dragichevo. The design of this project has already been initiated. Now this section comprises of three lanes, and according to preliminary plans, it should be of four lanes.
"The launch of Lyulin motorway is according to schedule and within the earmarked funding. This was achieved due to the accelerated work on it over the last 18 months," explained Plevneliev.
"For the region of Sofia, Lyulin highway is not just a road but an option for access to future development," said Dirk Ahner. He added that this project became a symbol of ambition, persistence and success.

"I will inspect in person the damages, which Mapa Cengiz caused to the roads in the village of Golyamo Buchino during the construction of Lyulin motorway, and the road-repair works,” said Prime Minister Boyko Borissov.
