Kristalina Georgieva: The victims of the earthquake will have a place to live in

"Bulgaria will accelerate the development of its risk profile, in order to focus the funding on two critical areas - strengthening the infrastructure and creating an improved preventive basis, in order to be better prepared for disasters," said Georgieva in the village of Divotino, region of Pernik.

She inspected the most damaged regions by the earthquake of May 22, together with Minister of Interior Tsvetan Tsvetanov and Minister of Labour and Social Policy Totyu Mladenov.

“The European Commission can help through its social funds, which are available in Bulgaria. Resources under social programs for employment of around BGN 10-15 mln may be allocated as well. This money will help the region to address the unemployment problem during the recovery process,” said Georgieva.

“If necessary, we are ready to send additional materials and equipment,” added the Bulgarian Commissioner.

"It turns out that some public buildings in Bulgaria have not been insured against earthquake. This is an issue on which the Government will make a decision. The Cabinet will consider how to implement the insurance of residential buildings as well, in order to ensure that it is socially fair,” said the Bulgarian Commissioner.

The same issue was discussed earlier by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov in Yambol. "It is unacceptable for the municipal buildings to have no insurance against earthquakes, so that we have to spend money from the budget now," said Borissov.

In the village of Divotino, Deputy Prime Minister Tsvetanov appealed to the other political parties to follow the example of GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) and to support the region of Pernik financially. On Sunday, the press office of GERB reported that the party donated BGN300,000 from its state subsidy for the most affected by the disaster areas.
