GERB donates BGN 1 mln to the victims of the flood

“GERB will redirect BGN 1 mln from the state subsidy to people in the village of Biser, which was swept by a powerful wave on Monday morning after a dam burst. The decision was taken at a meeting of the party’s Executive Committee,” announced officials from the press service of GERB yesterday.

Because of the tragedy, the Government announced 8 February as a day of national mourning.

Until yesterday evening, the names of eight persons killed by the tidal wave were released: Ivanka Karamfilova, Georgi Sirakov, Hristo Hristov, Angel Stankov from the village of Biser - elderly people who drowned in their homes; Georgi and Nedyalka Boychevi - swept away by a bridge while travelling in a jeep, and Vasko and Liliana Delevi - whose car was stuck in the mud between the villages of Biser and Ivanovo. Yesterday, by the time when Klassa daily went to press the searching for two other missing people continued.

Over 120 animals were drowned

Until yesterday, some120 drowned animals were registered in the village of Biser - cows, calves, pigs, sheep, goats and donkeys. Their owners will be compensated, said officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food.

European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, Kristalina Georgieva visited the village and provided blankets, food and essentials. She said that Bulgaria could rely on resources from the Solidarity Fund of the EU if the flood damages exceeded 0.6% of the country’s GDP. “This will not be known in the coming weeks, but if the damages meet this condition, the country will receive funding from this fund,” said Georgieva. "The situation is severe in Europe - emergency was declared in 9 countries, including Bulgaria," she added.
