A scandal prevents the election of the Appellate Prosecutor of Sofia

The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) failed again to elect the Appellate Prosecutor of Sofia after the discussion following the hearing of the presentation of all candidates ended up with a scandal.
In fact, the main rivals for that judicial post were the Deputy Sofia City Prosecutor, Bozhidar Dzhambazov and the Vice Appellate Prosecutors Galina Stoyanova and Yordan Stoev. In fact, neither one of them managed to gain the required minimum of 13 votes. As a result of the runoff voting, Dzhambazov and Stoev received 10 votes, while the nomination of the latter was supported openly by only one SJC member.
Immediately after the ballot, the Chief Prosecutor Boris Velchev left the meeting visibly irritated.

The scandal started after the presentation of Bozhidar Dzhambazov, when Nestor Nestorov took the floor. He reminded a case from 2006, when the name of Dzhambazov was detected in the phone diary of a detained during a raid against the distribution of child pornography.

The latter angered the Chief Prosecutor, since Nestorov did not ask his question during the hearing of the presentation of Dzhambazov, while he was in the hall, but decided to attack his coleague dishonestly in the back.

Boris Velchev even proposed that Bozhidar Dzhambazov be summoned again in order to defend himself and respond to the "high moral criteria set by Mr. Nestorov".

However, this failed to happen, and after a subsequent vote Dzhambazov received 6 votes, Galina Stoyanova gained 4 ones, while Yordan Stoev got 10 votes.
Based on this result, Velchev addressed again his colleagues and asked them why no one of them had backed openly Stoev. "I cannot understand well why the most favored candidate was not backed with even a single supporting statement," reckoned Velchev.

Nevertheless, Ivan Kolev spoke in defense of Yordan Stoev. At the same time, Kolev acknowledged that h had collaborated with Bozhidar Dzhambazov and remained unsatisfied because his colleague was putting more attention on PR activities rather than on the core of his duties.

In fact, Bozhidar Dzhambazov became notorious in the media with the convictions he obtained on the cases filed against Alexander Tomov as well as against Valentin Dimitrov - Valio the Heater as well as after receiving his final sentence for money laundering from cigarette smuggling in the name of Petar Petrov – The Amigo.

At the end of last year, SJC again failed to elect a Head of the Sofia Prosecutor's Office of Appeal.
