The Balkan wines to be judged by some of the greatest Masters of Wine in the world
The Balkans International Wine Competition (BIWC) - the biggest Balkans wine forum will take place in Sofia from 14 to 17 June 2012. More than 100 wineries from all the Balkan countries look forward to present their wines to the famous BIWC jury, the numerous wine loving public and to compete with hundreds of red, white, rose, sparkling and dessert wines produced within the boundaries of the Balkan Peninsula.For the first time the Balkan wines will be tasted and judged by some of the greatest Masters of Wine, such as the Chairman of the BIWC Konstantinos Lazarakis MW - the only Master of Wine in the Balkans, Caroline Gilby MW - United Kingdom, Christy Canterbury MW - USA, Paul Liversedge MW - Switzerland and many more wine professionals, helping to build the positive image of the Balkan wines in the world.
The panel of judges will choose a winner in each of the following categories: dry white wine, dry red wine, dry rosé wine, sparkling wine and dessert wine. The winner in each category will be awarded a special trophy.
The Grand Trophy of the Balkans International Wine Competition 2012 will be awarded independently of a category, and to the wine that our international jury deems to be the finest, most desirable and most marketable wine presented at the competition.
The BIWC 2012 will be a meeting point for world wine experts, Masters of Wine, wine merchants, wine journalists and bloggers from the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, India, the Scandinavian countries, Italy, Germany, Belgium, and all the Balkan countries, among others.
The Balkans can be proud of the most ancient wine history in the world. With nearly 1.8 million tons wine production per year, the Balkans ranks 5th in the world, right after the largest wine producing countries Italy, France, Spain and USA. For the last decade the Balkans has made enormous progress in the quality of its wines and can state its claim as a key player on the world wine stage.
