“I think art is often misunderstood in the realm of religion, and it’s OK,” said famous american singer Erykah Badu. “In America, it’s a lot different. Art is also misunderstood but it is not such a harsh gesture to promote the names of God. I am learning and understanding about Islam in other countries more as we travel.”



Erykah Badu would be playing Sofia’s Elevation festival in June 24 on the open air scene at Dobroslavtsi Military Air Base, but now we have full summer touring schedule from the soul queen. She’ll play a trio of US dates in Indianapolis, Jacksonville, and Atlanta, then return to the states for an appearance at the Summer Spirit Festival in Columbia, MD on August 4th.

In the midst of all of this, she plans two albums this year, a solo project and an LP with her improvisational beat group, the Cannabinoids.

Born in Dallas, Erica Abi Wright started her career as a rapper under the pseudonym MC Apples. Later, she took her stage name Badu, making reference to the jazz scat sound badoum. In 1997, her album Baduizm brought new freshness to the synthetic R&B scene of the period. Her voice has been compared to an African version of Sarah Vaughan or Billie Holiday.



Erykah Badu is a true showwoman who turns all of her appearances into theatrical performances. She has won several Grammy Awards with her previous albums, and her latest two have made headlines. The first part, New Amerykah, offers the sensual songs for which she is renowned. The second part, Amerykah, Part II: Return of the Ankh led to a media scandal following the release of the video clip Window Seat. We see the singer walking through the streets of Dallas, gradually removing her clothes throughout the song, to end completely naked on Dealey Plaza, where she collapses in the exact spot where John Fitzgerald Kennedy was assassinated on November, 22nd, 1963.

Her return on the Nice Jazz Festival scene, where she made a great impression in 2009, will be one of the greatest concerts of the summer. « In one of her rare appearances in France, the singer delivered a concert of stupefying mastery… Vocally she is capable of moving in a single breath from the most seductive jazz whisper to controlled R&B hysteria" say Olivier Nuc – Le Figaro.
