PM Boyko Borissov: EU should pay attention to the Black Sea region

In his speech at the 20^th Anniversary Summit of the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC), hosted by the Republic of Turkey in Istanbul, on June 26, Bulgarian PM Boyko Borissov focused on the interaction between BSEC and the EU as a factor that could give new potential for development to the Black Sea countries. The information was provided by the Government Information Office.

“As a member of the European Union, Bulgaria will continue to work towards focusing the interest of the Community to our region,” stated PM Borissov. According to him, the drafting of a Black Sea strategy, like the Danube Strategy of the EU, will be to the benefit of all of Europe. PM Borissov pointed out that Bulgaria had implemented a number of bilateral and trilateral projects in road, rail and energy infrastructure, but it is important that they become common projects for the region.

The statement of PM Boyko Borissov aided the dialogue between Armenia and Azerbaijan and contributed to the adoption of a declaration on the priorities of the organization. PM Borissov said such disputes hold back the development of the entire region “instead of using its economic and cultural potential and its natural resources to turn it into a factor for the formation of policies and improve the welfare of our nations”.

EU Commissioner Maria Damanaki, the presidents of Romania and Turkey Abdullah Gul and Traian Basescu,  congratulated and Bulgarian Prime Minister for expressing a position that made the diplomats resume the negotiations on the final declaration. The document adopted later sets the priorities of BSEC related to the achievement of specific results in the areas of economy, power engineering, environmental policies, investment in the education of youths and good neighbourly relations.
