NHIF is inspecting every hospital in Bulgaria

“We are conducting inspections in all hospitals, without exception. Findings are already starting to come in, giving us an insight into the state of healthcare establishments. The very purpose of this effort is to create a snap-shot of the sector,” said Plamen Tsekov, head of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), reported Focus.

NHIF inspections cover healthcare establishments' activities in real time – how many patients were admitted for the day, how many were discharged, whether the clinical paths were followed properly, whether there is a record of the medicines used, whether the patients' charts were finished before discharging them, whether the necessary tests were registered in the patient's history. “For the most part, medical-treatment facilities are immaculate, they try to follow the rules, which is good. There are also places where we have registered some oversights. Our goal in conducting these inspections is to find which establishments make mistakes and assist the management in enforcing stricter control over employees. Our intention isn't to point a finger, but to be a correct counter-party and help remove irregularities in the work process,” Plamen Tsekov added.

NHIF has already published reports on 83 hospitals inspected in June on its website.

Proposals to cut surcharges imposed by retailers and wholesalers will have a positive effect on NHIF's budget, according to Tsekov. “When you spend over BGN 500 mln annually on medicines, 4% is a solid amount,” he said.
