Miroslav Naydenov: Infected Spanish cucumbers have not been imported in Bulgaria

“The inspections show that infected Spanish cucumbers have not been imported in Bulgaria,” said Minister of Agriculture and Food Miroslav Naydenov. The country of origin of the vegetables was localized via the system for rapid exchange of information in the EU. Spain, as a producer, gave guarantees that cucumbers from this shipment will not be delivered to EU countries.

“The bacterium Escherichia coli has not been found in vegetables in Bulgaria,” said Naydenov. According to him, the contamination is due to the fact that the cucumbers have been watered or fertilized with natural fertilizers or the carrier did not ensure the necessary hygiene measures.

“We cannot ban the imports of cucumbers without the consent of the European Commission,” said the Minister. He noted that so far there was no indication that such a ban would be imposed. “If we find vegetables that do not meet the standards, they will be destroyed,” said Naydenov. From now on, the producers of vegetables will be subject to more stringent control.
