Repairs of dangerous highway bridges to start in September

"Unless procedures are challenged in court, the repairs of dangerous highway viaducts, which will be commissioned through an expedited public tender, will start in September," announced Lilyana Pavlova, Minister of Regional Development and Public Works in a BNT appearance. "The bids of all 9 firms and consortiums participating in the Government procurement procedure will be evaluated on August 18. Speed limits in the area of the viaducts set to undergo repairs have been reduced for safety reasons," Pavlova added. "The oldest section of Trakia highway, between Sofia and Plovdiv, is in need of fundamental reconstruction and, since it's not eligible for EU funding, we'll have to use money from the state budget, which will slow the process down. The overhaul of 60 kilometres will cost taxpayers BGN 60 mln. "Highways excluded, Bulgaria has some 20,000 kilometres of roads, most of them in poor state," Pavlova continued. She explained that repairs of the national road network are funded through the Operational Programme Regional Development and loans from the World Bank, but the money is enough to improve the state of no more than 20-30% of the roads. September will see the start of reconstruction works on 200 kilometres of second- and third-class roads, with works on some 800 kilometres already in progress.
