Food aid to be distributed to 308,000 Bulgarians

“A total of 22,000,000 tonnes of food will be distributed this year to 308,000 Bulgarians under the EU-funded charity programme,” Hristo Grigorov, Director of the Bulgarian Red Cross, said during the opening of a centre for distribution of essential foodstuffs to socially disadvantaged people.

One-off aid will be distributed at 337 such centres by some 5,000 volunteers of the Bulgarian Red Cross. In Sofia alone, 17,000 needy will receive food at 12 centres throughout the capital city.

The Bulgarian Red Cross will distribute a total of 15 kinds of products in two tranches. “Essential foodstuffs will be distributed and we, with the help of the Red Cross, will decide on the location of the centres. The first tranche will be until October 2 and the second one will start on October 3,” specified Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov
