Bulgaria's President is skeptical about the electronic vote for Belene

I am sure that the electronic vote on the referendum for Belene is a very good idea, but whether we are ready for that is to be answered by the executive authority. Personally, I doubt that we have such an opportunity, but I support this, said President Rossen Plevneliev on Tuesday, after taking part in the opening of the Swiss plant for fibre-optic components in Sofia.

The Head of State reminded that the issue of the introduction of electronic voting for next year's parliamentary vote was discussed during the debate on the electoral law, held at his office a few months ago.

According to Rossen Plevneliev, however, "there cannot be a referendum on a specific project, and the question should be asked in principle."

"We have a golden opportunity, namely with the debate and the preparation of the referendum, to show the whole truth about the Bulgarian energy sector and I am optimistic that this will happen in Parliament," said the president.

The president stressed that the discussion should not be politicised and it should not come again to political opposition. "The energy sector should unite us because the price in the energy sector is to be paid by Bulgaria's next generation," said Plevneliev. If politicians want Bulgarians to vote for them they should "candidly put the numbers on the table". According to him, what has happened in the industry over the past 20 years should be revealed.

Regarding the new plant, Plevneliev said: "I am proud that, today, a high-tech enterprise of a Swiss company is being opened in Sofia. Switzerland is the most competitive economy and a symbol of the highest quality in the world. In this way, our country is slowly turning into a small Switzerland."
