Taxi fares in Sofia to jump by 20% as of November 1

Cab services in Sofia will cost 20% more after November 1, or, to be more specific, about BGN 0.75 per kilometre during the day and BGN 0.90 at night.

This is the first serious price increase in the sector since 2007, according to a BNT report citing information from the industry’s trade association representing small and large cab firms.

Apart from the kilometres driven, the 20% jump will also apply to the initial fee charged for calling a taxi and the flat rate (when the taxi is not moving). Cab firms dismissed any allegations of entering in collusion. They said it is normal practice to follow suit when the biggest player in the sector raises the fares it charges. A few years ago, things were different but these days it’s a well-established dynamic. “There comes a moment when prices have to go up, if taxi drivers are to make enough money to cover their car leasing and maintenance costs, their household needs and pay taxes,” Emil Ignatov, Co-Chairperson of the non-profit organisation Taxi Union said. The industry is confident that the price increase will not put off clients since the service is not used on a regular basis and with some people only in extraordinary circumstances.
