The State Agency for Metrological Supervision: The replacement of 80,000 elevators is not necessary

It is true that the elevators have a revolting appearance, but that does not mean that they are dangerous, Chairman of the State Agency for Metrology and Technical Surveillance Angel Angelov, said for BNR on Thursday, regarding the claim by the Bulgarian Lift Association (BLA) that 90,000 lifts must be urgently repaired or replaced.

Angelov explained that BLA's request to replace the lifts is equivalent to admitting that the companies within the association are not doing their job. The elevators they maintain include the 80,000 in question, the Speaker of the State Agency for Metrology and Technical Surveillance stressed.

He also said that the purpose of their statements is related to their falling profits and the decline in construction in recent years. They found a way out in the idea that the state should make people replace their elevators. With prices ranging from BGN 20,000 to 40,000, announced by Valentin Marinkov (Chairman of BLA - Editor's note) per elevator, the total amount is approximately BGN 2.5 bn, Angelov estimated.

Technical inspection of elevators is conducted every three years in the country. Independent experts from private companies carry out these inspections. Annually, we terminate the operation of 300 to 600 lifts, Angelov added.
