Djankov: The Ministry of Health is the State's largest debtor

Simeon Djankov, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, responded to the attacks by the Bulgarian Medical Association against him. "Every unreformed sector, such as the health care sector, always wants more money, but shows no results, " said the Minister in an interview for Nova TV's programme Hello Bulgaria. Djankov stressed that, within the period of this mandate, the sector has been given a total of BGN 2.8 bn, but no good results in healthcare have been achieved for this money.

Exactly Mr. Raichinov and BMA, the various ministers who came one after the other in the Ministry of Health, they should tell the public what results will be delivered for the money they want, Djankov said.

It will take the country another 10-12 years to reach the size of the average wage of advanced European countries, the Finance Minister added.

"This is so because we have saluted to the USSR for decades, while other countries have been developing," commented the Minister.

Djankov stated again his position against any additional payments above the statutory amounts of pensions and salaries.

"It is not right to give away money just because we have a surplus," said the Minister. And he explained that the elderly will get Christmas bonuses only if the budget allows it. And that will be known around December 27.

"We're now building more kindergartens to enable mothers to return to work as early as the second year after childbirth, since I often hear that women are being held at home because childcare institutions are full," said Djankov.

However, he was adamant that there is no way for the construction of new nurseries to substitute the increase of maternity benefits.
