Almost 40% of Bulgarians concerned about job security
Some 39% of employed Bulgarians are concerned about the security of their job, according to data of the most recent nationally representative survey of BBSS Gallup International, commissioned by Klassa daily.Despite the considerable share of Bulgarians fearing unemployment, somewhat reassuring news is that the attitudes of Bulgarians have not changed significantly since 2010. At the end of 2009, the most significant growth in the pessimism of working Bulgarians was observed regarding their job security when 42% of the respondents described their current working position as unstable and those feeling at ease were 32% less. At the end of 2010, the first calm-down of attitudes was registered after the onset of the economic crisis when the share of those feeling that their job may be at risk declined by 5%, compared to 2009.
This year, just like in 2010, the proportion of people at ease and those uncertain about their job security is almost equal. Some 37% do not expect to be laid off or fired, and 39% are of the opposite opinion.
Logically, the people employed in the private sector, are more concerned about losing their job than those working in the public sector. Some 42% of the respondents employed in private enterprises and companies share concerns about their job security and only 32% are not worried.
However, Bulgarians employed in the public sector are not absolutely carefree about their job, although they are less concerned than those working in the private sector. Some 39% of the people polled from the public sector do not feel an immediate risk of becoming unemployed, while 44% share such concerns.
Self-employed Bulgarians and those running their own business feel most at ease about their career and employment. Although small-and medium-sized enterprises are among those most affected by the economic crisis, the majority (57%) of people running their own business say their job is secure.
Answering a question about the prospects of finding a new job if they lose their current employment, the majority of respondents said that it would take them quite a long time to find a new job. At present, only 17% of the employed Bulgarians believe they will find a new job quickly and easily if they lose their current employment. This is the lowest percentage measured since 2005.
