Bulgaria ranks fifth in the EU in terms of concerns about the quality of water

A total of 86% of Bulgarian citizens believe that water-relater problems in the country are very serious, showed a survey of Eurobarometer, conducted in the EU Member-States.

The majority of European citizens are of the opinion that in their respective country there is a serious problem with the quality and purity of water and water basins. Some 68% of European citizens on average share their concerns about the state of rivers, lakes and costal waters. In 21 countries out of the 27 Member-States, the percentage of people assessing water-related problems as serious exceeds half of the adult population. The countries where water-related issues are regarded as less serious and urgent are Estonia, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, Austria and Finland.

The highest concern about this problem has been manifested in our northern neighbour Romania - we share two common water basins - the Black Sea and the Danube River. A total of 94% of Romanians believe that the quality of water issue is extremely serious.

Around 90% of the people in Italy, France and Greece are also worried about the quality of water and water basins.

Bulgaria is one of the countries with growing concerns about the purity of water basins. However, concerns in our country have been increasing slightly – by some 3%, compared to 2009. By comparison, the degree of concern about the problems of water basins in Romania has been growing more significantly than in Bulgaria. Now, as many as 94% of Romanians assess the situation concerning water basins as problematic, while, in 2009, this share was 88%.
