NCPOS: 76% of Bulgarians will celebrate New Year at home
Some 76% of Bulgarians plan to celebrate New Year's Eve at home. The majority of people who will celebrate at home are over 60 years of age, retired, living in small towns and villages, as well as respondents with lower incomes. The data came from a nationally representative survey conducted by the National Centre for Public Opinion Study - NCPOS.Some 10% of the respondents have not decided where they will be on New Year's Eve yet - these include mostly young people up to 29 years of age, students and citizens of the capital city.
Another 5% of the respondents will celebrate in a restaurant or a club. More often, these are people who suffer no privation.
A total of 6% of the respondents plan to travel for the New Year Holidays - to another city in the country, to a ski resort or abroad.
Just 1% of the respondents will go to a concert or to the city's main square. Another 1% of the respondents said that they will work on New Year's Eve.
Funds provided for celebration remain relatively unchanged, despite inflation. One-third of the respondents (32%) allotted between BGN 50 and BGN 100, 28% - between BGN 20 and BGN 50. Nearly one-fifth of the people will spend more than BGN 100, and 15% - up to BGN 20. Some 7% of the respondents indicated that they can't afford to celebrate at all.
When it comes to money set aside for gifts to relatives, 53% of the respondents said that amounts between BGN 20 and BGN 100 will be enough, 19% will buy gifts worth up to BGN 20 and 11% will spend more than BGN 100 on gifts. Some 17% of the respondents will not buy any gifts.
About 34% of the respondents said that they intend to give money to charity. More often, these are people aged between 40 and 49 years, respondents with higher education, residents of district towns and people with incomes of more than BGN 290 per person per household.
The survey was conducted between November 30 and December 6, 2012, according to the method of semi-standardised face-to-face interviews of 1,000 adult Bulgarian citizens in 86 cities across the country.
Public expectations for the future of the country, as well as the personal prospects of the Bulgarians in 2013, are marked by cautious optimism. Some 43% of Bulgarians expect that the country will be in a better condition in 2013 and another 7% hope that the new year will be at least as good as this one. One-fifth of Bulgarians expect that the new year will be worse for the country, compared to 2012, and one in four said that it would be just as bad as 2012.
