KAT will use electronic traffic tickets

KAT, the police department responsible for auto transport control, will start issuing electronic tickets for traffic violations apart from speeding, Bogdan Milchev, head of Traffic Police at the Sofia Directorate of the Interior Ministry, told BNT. He said that there are other extremely dangerous violations while driving in the city in addition to speeding, such as not heeding the red light signal, failing to give way to oncoming traffic at a controlled junction and parking violations. Currently, KAT has 3 stationary and 7 mobile cameras monitoring traffic in the capital. Jaywalking or reckless pedestrian crossing of roadways is another very serious problem, Milchev said. In the last year, a total of 7,000 pedestrians were fined for jaywalking, which is double the number in 2011. This year KAT will  focus on improving the culture of auto transportation. Four motormen died in accidents in 2012, compared to seven in 2011.

Reviewing the road traffic situation following the holidays, Milchev said there were no congestions. There were only 8 accidents on the first day of the year, with the norm being 30-40 during holidays.

The number of people caught driving under the influence of alcohol in 2012 was down by 500 on 2011.
