Bulgaria ranks second in Europe in terms of gold output for 2012

“Last year, 5,302 kg of gold were produced in Bulgaria from nearly 1,360,000 tonnes of gold containing ore. This may assign our country a prestigious place, ranking it second in the extraction of the valuable precious metals in Europe,” said Elka Mladenova from the authority responsible for the management of natural resources at the Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism. However, the figures are yet to be specified because final data will be announced in February after the companies submit their final reports. Economy Minister Delian Dobrev warned that gold mining should not be expected to raise the living standard of Bulgarians because this is an industry with very high costs and the gold reserves in our country are some of the greatest.

Revenues from the concession of gold deposits are forecast to increase significantly after extraction begins in the towns of Krumovgrad, Tran and Breznik where the projects are yet to be coordinated.

Concession receipts from metal mineral amount to some BGN 33 mln.
